The Government of Central Africa has provided funding for the deployment of solar-powered street lights in Bangui. A $5 million loan was provided by the Saudi Development Fund (SDF). The corresponding agreement was recently signed in Washington, United States of America. This took place during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group.
The Central African delegation was led by Prime Minister Felix Molua, who signed a soft loan agreement with SDF Managing Director Sultan bin Abdel Rahman al-Mashad. According to the Office of the Prime Minister of the Central African Republic, the funding will enable the second phase of the public lighting project. This includes equipping the Central African capital with solar-powered street lights. This approach will help reduce public lighting costs in the long run, but will still require some care and maintenance.
The SDF estimates that these solar-powered street lights should span at least 70 kilometers of corridors in the Central African capital. “The project will install state-of-the-art lampposts and solar panels to provide clean, sustainable energy to ensure the highest level of lighting efficiency,” the Riyadh-based financial institution said.
The equipment should first of all increase the level of security in the Central African capital. The districts of Sika 2 and 3 in the second district of Bangui were the hardest hit by this phenomenon, resulting in looting and armed attacks. The Boali Power System Development and CAR-DRC Power Interconnection project funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) has begun improving street lighting in the Central African capital. The project significantly improved public lighting and electrification of homes in the communities of Galabaja, Ngongonon, Kolongo, Carmel Bimbo and Boy Rabbe.
